The Amazons of Copons

The Amazons of Copons investigates the memory and transformations of women’s work in Copons, a village in the Anoia region, and its inscription in the territory.

Drawing on archival research, oral memory and photography, the project brings women’s narratives into dialogue with the material and visual traces they have left across the territory. Domestic, agricultural, industrial, educational and creative work emerges as a history embedded in everyday life yet often absent from official narratives.

Rather than reconstructing a linear history, the project layers archive, testimony and contemporary imagery, bringing different temporalities and forms of representation into the same space.

Developed in collaboration with historian Àngels Solà Parera, Les Amazones de Copons unfolded through the streets of the village and was later published as a photobook.

“In the surrounding area this place is called the village of the Amazons, because all the men are away from the village, scattered throughout the Kingdom and the Indies, and only return home from time to time. And indeed, when I was there, I saw very few men and a great many women.”

Francisco de Zamora, Diario de los viajes hechos en Cataluña, 1785–1790
