Frequently asked questions about commissions
The questions that come up almost every time before a commission, answered directly. If yours isn't here, write to me and I'll answer.
Before the commission
What kind of work do you take on commission?
Author-led portraiture, visual worlds for artists and creative projects, live and creative process photography, and cultural projects with institutions. I don't shoot weddings or social events.
Where do you work, and do you travel?
My studio is at Les Naus de l'Art, in La Floresta (Sant Cugat del Vallès), and I work regularly in Barcelona and its area. I travel across Catalonia and beyond when the project justifies it; travel is budgeted separately.
How do I ask for a quote?
Write to me explaining what you need, by when, and what use the images will have. With those three things I can give you a closed proposal, with no later surprises.
What does the price depend on?
Three things: production and session time, the number of final edited images, and the usage rights you need — an image for social media doesn't cost the same as a campaign with media distribution. Every quote itemises the three separately.
During the session
What is a portrait session with you like?
It starts before the session, with a conversation about what image is needed and what for. Then I propose an art direction — space, light, wardrobe, attitude — and we work unhurried. Nobody has to know how to pose: making that unnecessary is my job.
Can I bring my own ideas and references?
Yes, and it's ideal. References help us understand each other quickly. From there I propose a gaze of my own: the aim isn't to reproduce an image that already exists, but to find yours.
Do you photograph rehearsals and live performances?
Yes. I work with companies and musicians documenting rehearsals, creative processes and performances, with the most discreet presence possible so as not to interfere with the work.
Afterwards
What usage rights do you grant?
Authorship of the images is always mine, and exploitation rights are granted as agreed: scope, media and duration are written into the quote. If you later need a use different from the agreed one, the licence is extended.
Do I have to credit you when I publish the photos?
Yes. The credit line «© Neus Solà» always accompanies published images, including on social media. It's an inalienable right and, besides, it's the usual way other projects find me.
Do you do the editing and retouching?
Yes. Editing is part of the work and isn't outsourced: selection and processing are where a large part of the final image is decided.
Can I commission an exhibition or a publication of your personal work?
Yes. To exhibit, publish or acquire work from any of the personal projects, write to me directly and we'll look at it.
